Pocas veces se consigue un segundo plano de una batalla, y esta es una de ellas.
Este plano levantado por el que era el Comandante de Ingenieros del Ejército del General Pezuela, el Coronel Francisco Javier de Mendizabal, tiene la ventaja de ser el testimonio de un testigo presencial de los hechos.

Si bien el mapa presenta mejores detalle, el norte está bien orientado, el masizo montañoso en la parte inferior se muestra mas extenso que en el mapa anterior, aún incurre en la falta de proporciones características de un bosquejo.Por ejemplo las laderas de la montaña en el borde inferior derecho se extienden demasiado hacia el este, acortando la distancia del terreno apto para maniobra.

Hay que recordar que la batalla no fué un acierto táctico del Comandante en Jefe realista, mas bien lo contrario aunque la balanza luego se inclinara hacia ellos y se coronaran con los laureles de la victoria.


Not very often we can count with a second map for a battle and this one one of those fortunate times.

This map was drawn by the Engeneer in Chief of Pezuela's Army, Colonel Francisco Javier de Mendizabal, who was eyewitness of the battle.

It is true that it is more accurate in details sucha as the north orientation and the size and magnitude of the mountains shown in the lower part of the map, but the proportions of the battlefield itself does not show the real terrain where the battle took place. For example the mountain slopes at the bottom right are too far east into the battle field reducing the field able to allow troop manouvers.

Although victory finaly moved to the Realista's side it was not the result of the Realista Commander tactic employed and that may be the reason why the map is not as detailed as other ones where the successful tactic deployed by the Commander was intentionaly shown in detail.

Seleccionar el plano de la batalla no es sencillo y es crucial para el análisis de la batalla. La fuente y autor del plano son esenciales para determinar la exactitud del mismo ya que el relevar el plano en el sitio mismo de los hechos otorga un mayor grado de exactitud.

En el plano arriba mostardo la falta de escala no permite establecer las distancias correctamente y el gran nivel de detalle en las elevaciones del terreno hacen imaginar que el plano es muy preciso. Pero observando bien las lineas de batalla tienen la misma longitud que la extensión del campo del batalla, algo que hace improbable los movimientos que se produjeron en la acción.

Adicionalmente el cordón montañoso mostrado en la paarte inferior del plano parece tener un ancho equivalente a un tercio del ancho de la meseta donde se desarrolló la batalla, pero en realidad es al revés, el ancho de la meseta es de un tercio del ancho del cordón montañoso.

Por último la orientación cardinal del plano no es correcta ya que marca el norte hacia el lago cuando en realidad el lago se halla hacia el oeste.



Choose an accurate battle map it is not easy and it is essential for the battle analysis. The source and author of the map are vital to determint its accruacy.

The map shown above has no scale and for that reason distances can not be calculated. On the other hand the great detail used to draw the mountains and hills give the impression that we are looking at an accurate map. But looked in detail we can see that the battle line formed has the same lenght that the plateau depth, something which had made impossible to perform the movements that really happen in the battle.

Also the mountains shown in the lower part of the map are 1/3rd the wide than the plateau and in fact it is the opposite.

The last issue is that the map is showing the north in the wrong direction as it is pointing the lake which is actually at the west of the plateau.

La batalla de Vilcapugio - Vilcapugio Battle

Hemos comenzado con un proyecto que teníamos en la recamara desde hace tiempo: La batalla de Vilcapugio.

Nuestro proyecto es publicar las dos batallas del General Pezuela en el Alto Perú anteriores a Viluma, que fuera nuestra primera publicación, para así completar en detalle la campaña que realizara entre los años 1813 a 1815.

Por ahora hemos podido realizar el diseño tridimensional del campo de batalla del que publicamos debajo de estas lineas una vista del mismo mirando hacia el NE, tal como lo hubieran visto desde la altura las tropas del General Belgrano.

En breve podremos tomar mediciones para poder describir el campo de batalla de la forma mas precisa posible.

We have started a long delayed proyect of completing the battles of Pezuela's campaing in Alto Perú from 1813 to 1815 which we started with the last of his battles: Viluma.

Now it is time to continue with the first one: Vilcapugio.

We have just finished rendering the 3D model of the battlefield, and above we published an image of it looking NE as it would have been seen by Belgrano's troops.

We will start making some measurements to describe the ground as best as we can.
